Why?????????????

Why would my favorite MBL team the Florida Marlins change their logo to to this wackness? I mean I get trying to to incorporate the art deco style of South Beach, but you have to remember that this team has been representing the Southern part of Florida since it's inception! Why alienate those fans? For half the money I would have come up with something that would have been way hotter and made me and the fans out there like me happy. True Marlin fans stock up on the old 59/50s now cause if your like me, you just can't under good conscience rock one with the new wack logo!

Life As I'm Livin' It!

I figured that since my last blog was me just venting about how I am not motivated enough to get some things that I really want to accomplish done that I would one, give an update on some of those things and two, tell you about my current existence.

Since the last blog, I have been laser focused on the 1Way devotional book. Good news I have made some progress. I am working with a company for the cover art as well as going over each devo for editing and update purposes. We started writing this thing back in 2006. We did at one point have some interest from some ver interested parties but it never worked out. The good news is that having gone thru it devo by devo the material is still fresh, the messages are still relevant. This is very promising. My goals to have it published by end of this year. Since this is now my focus, the work on new music has come to a halt. I have accquired tracks and made some great relationships with writers but I am not currently recording right now until I know this book is finito! So unless someone hits me up to feature, no new music for a while.

So what exactly do I do when I am not doing music...... ministry! I work at Urban Youth Impact. It's a non-profit urban ministry here in Bomb Beach, Florida. Here I get to work with urban kids everyday showing them Christ. I guess I could if I wanted to call myself a musicianary/urban missionary. It is one of the greatest jobs I have ever had but probabaly the most challanging as well. Bad days seem to outweigh the good on most weeks but when the good weeks come, it is more than worth it! I also get to work with some really cool people from all different walks of life. Furthur stretching me as an individual. One of the cool things I get to do on a weekly basis is lead chapel. I am really enjoying that alot.
I have been told often by those that have heard me speak that God has gifted me and I can see and feel that when I allow myself to. Doing these weekly chapels is helping mehone my communication skills. I'm not sure what the future holds but I bet God has something in mind.

On the fam front, being a husband, and father has had it own rewards! It is so dope to watch my kids grow up knowing that we are doing the best we can to make Jesus a part of their childhood. Now before you get all weird, here is what I mean. We tend to share the things in life that are important to us with those we care about the most right? Well, Christ is a central part of our family and has been even before we had kids. It would only be right to share Him with our sons. Deuteronomy 4-9 says it like this: The Lord is our God, the Lord alone. And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road, when you are going to bed and when you are getting up. Tie them to your hands and wear them on your forehead as reminders. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
This is what we are doing. Well, not tying anything on there heads but you get the point.
We are passing life down. Spiritual, generational information that is going to enrich them as they grow to appreciate whose they are, where they come from and where they are headed. I asked my son Micah recently how I was doing as a dad. He said " Your doing a great job dad. You love us and you work hard." in his simple statement I find comfort and success even if I don't think I'm as successful as I should be.

Time Is On My Side, Isn't it?

It seems like I always let time slip away from me. It is my most valuable resource and once it is gone I can never get it back. If this is true, then why am I so willing to let it slip away so easily? Maybe it’s lack of discipline, maybe I’m lazy, maybe I am tired, or maybe I’m just comfortable with the way life is, which is a very dangerous place to be. After all, there are only so many hours in a day right? I mean I can’t really be expected to neglect my family to pursue the many things that I dream of doing, can I? Yet the call of those things that I dream of achieving keeps on calling me like an old friend. Write that book, record that album, and take that risk. But still I sit around letting time lap me like a slow runner. Wow! Looks like I need to get out a calendar put some dates on it, and do away with anything that would be considered a time waster. It is time to get it done, time to do! When I look at last year, most of my achievement in the form of personal goals came in the last month of the year. This year has to be different. It is time to do or fail trying. Maybe next year by this time, I will be a co-author of a book and have a new CD released. We shall get up and get at it. Something will be different! Now I am accountable to everyone that reads this and hopefully this is enough of a motivation to get it done.
Don’t get me wrong, I am by no means dissatisfied with being a father and a husband but I know that I was built for more. God has a bigger plan and I in my small finite mind have tried to pause it. Like I know better right? I am probably right now missing out on some huge blessing because of my lethargy.
So as I work my way thru the Life Application Bible this year, I hope to draw closer to the Lord and have Him show me the source of my complacency. After all I know the way and there is no need for me to be another cliché.

New York New York

Last week Spammy and I took a trip to NY. This was my fifth trip there. She has been there numerous times too. This was our second trip there together and by far the best. An interesting thing happened on the flight there. Ya see I'm really not that fond on flying. it is a great way to travel but I just don't like it. So.... we get to our seats and a young dude sits next to us. i noticed that he had a book called The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel. So I asked him if he was a believer. He said yes! I said cool. He said that he always recommended the book but never had a chance to read it. I told him that I had checked out the audio book (I'm not much for reading books)and I really liked it. That was it. For the next hour he read, I chatted with my wife and tried not to think about how high the plane was off the ground. Then... Pam noticed that he was listening to LeCrae. So, asked if he likes Christian Hip-Hop. He said yes. I said me too. He asked if I had heard LeCrae's new CD Rehab. I said only the 30 minute snippets on iTunes. So he played me his favorite cuts. I then asked him “how deep are you into Christian Hip-Hop”? He said “very deep”. This is where the convo takes a divine turn. I asked if he had ever heard of DJ Morph. He was like yeah I heard of him. Then I asked have you ever heard of 1Way. He said yeah. I used to listen to them or something like that. Then I said well I am in that group. Which was (if you know me) a little weird for me to say. He said no way! Then he said "I used to listen to this show on Friday nights. They played Christian Hip-Hop and that is where I got exposed to it." That when, (if you know my wife) you can guess what she did next. She blew up my spot! She said the show was called Jam Session and the DJ of it was sitting next to him! Oh yes she did! For the next hour we talked about radio, God, and Christian Hip-Hop. He explained how the show was an encouragement to him. And how he used to go the show's website to get the playlists so he could go cop all the music. I explained to him that as much as the show encouraged him and people like him it did the same for me even though I was the host. This guy’s name was Jeremy. He is a tennis player. Just to know that God would use a lil Hip-Hop show from Bomb Beach to touch, and encourage this dude to live his faith out loud is quite humbling! What is even more amazing than that is that the show has now been off the air for almost 5 years! It always encourages me and my personal walk with God to hear stories like Jeremy's. What’s crazy is that his dad was on the flight too and their seat got split up. So he gave Jeremy his choice of seats. He randomly chose the seat next to me. We were both amazed by God's sense of humor. He does indeed work in mysterious ways.

Well we made it to NY. We stayed on Park Avenue. We did the Gray lines Tour- All loops (the only way to properly see NYC as far as I'm concerned). The weather was chilly, people were skating at 30 Rock, it was amazing. I got to share it all with my best friend and wife of almost 7 years (anniversary is this Sunday). This time I whole heartedly must agree with the cheesy tourist sloganed t-shirt....... I Love New York!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(No) Labor Day Weekend, Word! The End of Summer, Dag!

Well, Labor Day weekend is here! That bittersweet moment in the year when ya get a long weekend (yeah!!), but it marks the official end of Summer (booo). I love/hate Labor Day weekend. Now it is back to life that consist of a 11am - 7pm work schedule and not enough time with the Newsome boys. Back to being TLA (day job) dad.
Don't get me wrong, I love my job and love what I do there, but getting to spend unlimited time with the fam in the Summer is something I always look forward to.
But alas, Summer is gone. Winter is coming. The good news is, I love Winter! The crisp air, and Holiday season. Especially in Soflo, it's like Summer but cooler, if you minus the work thing, it's a better version of Summer! So I will look forward to the temps dropping and spending more time outside with my boys. But for now, put on my black t-shirt and morn the passing of Summer. Till next year anyway.

Summer Maddness Pt. 2

I finally had a chance to listen to "Summertime" by DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince. It sounded better than ever. It was on a mixtape (CD) that was playing in the car so it hit me by surprise right after I posted the first blog! This summer has continued to be a good one.

Last week me and wifey got treated to a 3 day stay at The Breakers.
Being a Soflo native I was always very aware of The Breakers but was never fortunate enough to stay there, that is until now. Thanks to our job, Pam and I spent 3 relaxing days doing whatever we wanted to do there. No job, no schedule, no kids, no worries! Plus, we had an ocean view room. We are very much looking to go back sometime soon. It was totally not what I expected. I must admit, I had some prejudices going into it. Those preconceived notions were quickly erased by superb customer service and five star hospitality. The amenities at this place were incredible. I would definitely recommend it as a short get-a-way staycation (I call it breakcation) for any Bomb Beach resident, and as a vacation spot for anyone around the world who wants to know why I call this area of the country Bomb Beach. It's just simply paradise.

Summer Maddness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ahhh, Summer time. I love it! I usually easy into it by pulling out the old DJ Jazzy Jeff & Fresh Prince classic Summer Time, which I listen to every summer(although I haven't yet. I gotta get on that).BTW, the remix is hot too! Then I stock up on Country Time lemonade (summer's official drink). "Lemonade was a popular drink and it still is" (r.i.p. Guru)! Yes here in Bomb Beach, dress cool cause the heat is crazy!!!.
For the last 4 Summers I have been here at UYI and we do this thing called Summer Jam. I feel like a teacher. I get to do a school year with kids then take field trips in the Summer. It's like becoming a kid again. This summer so far I have been roller skating, been to the science museum, the Lake Worth Playhouse, and the beach every Tues! I'm also taking a dance class(big up Ms. Kelly)! Having a blast here fam.
Also getting to spend good times with my fam, Watching my boys (Micah & Miles) grow and mature and spending time with wifey. Yes summer is indeed good!
I have managed to do a lil writing and work a lil on some music too. I'll get back on that grind soon enough but for now I'm loving life and livin it!!!!! God is great and life well..... it's good!

There Are Still Good Musicians Out There

I was checking out a friend’s blog and over hearing another friend sing a couple weeks ago. Then those two random incidents collided when both those friends were across from my cubicle discussing an artist named Brooke Fraser. The song was Shadowfeet. I went on a quest to find Brooke’s music. I found two titles: What To Do with Daylight and Brooke Fraser Live at the Aoteo: Auckland New Zealand. What a breath of fresh air! I was just listening to the song C.S. Lewis. When I was hit in the face by the line:"If I find in myself desires nothing in this world can satisfy, I can only conclude that I was not made for here". Whoa!!!! This is music that will speak to your heart as well as your situation. Get some headphones, get alone and check out Brooke's stuff she is phenomenally dope!

C.S. Lewis Song lyrics

If I find in myself desires nothing in this world can satisfy,
I can only conclude that I was not made for here
If the flesh that I fight is at best only light and momentary,
then of course I'll feel nude when to where I'm destined I'm compared

[CHORUS]
Speak to me in the light of the dawn
Mercy comes with the morning
I will sigh and with all creation groan as I wait for hope to come for me

Am I lost or just less found? On the straight or on the roundabout of the wrong way?
Is this a soul that stirs in me, is it breaking free, wanting to come alive?
'Cause my comfort would prefer for me to be numb
And avoid the impending birth of who I was born to become

[CHORUS]

[BRIDGE]
For we, we are not long here
Our time is but a breath, so we better breathe it
And I, I was made to live, I was made to love, I was made to know you
Hope is coming for me
Hope, He's coming

Vote For My City!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Chris Sardinas graduated from The King’s Academy in 2007. He’s currently 20 years old and attending the University of Central Florida. When he’s not “being a college student,” Chris is putting West Palm Beach, FL on the map. Literally.

Google is holding the “Google Model Your Town Competition,” and thanks to Chris, West Palm Beach is one of five global finalists (along with cities in Peru, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom).

Sardinas spent months building 3D models of buildings and structures located in downtown West Palm Beach, resulting in a 1-minute video .

The voting began on Thursday and will run until May 1. If the TKA grad’s model of West Palm Beach wins the competition, the Palm Beach County school district will receive $10,000. In addition, Google is doing the following for the winning city:

•Visit from a Google team, along with an event in the winners’ honor
•Video profile of the winning team and their town, to be featured on YouTube
•Virtual tour of the winning town that will be added to the Google Earth website
•International publicity in the form of blog posts, tweets and other media
•Additional coverage on Google websites
If you would like to vote for West Palm Beach, support Chris and the city, please cut and paste this link and vote:

What's In A Chair????

Being an urban missionary is pretty cool. Yea, I'll admit it that it has it challenges but I get to see God at work every day where I work. With that said what's in this chair??? Well, an opportunity, a chance. It is where you can find rest, solace, and solitude. Here you can lighten your load and forget about things just for a few minutes. Sometimes a chair like this can be used in games. You ever play musical chairs? What about train wreck (madd fun btw)? Sometimes a chair like this can be used for punishment (ie. Super Nanny’s naughty chair). This particular chair was the place that a 4th grader met Christ in a very real way. She recognized her need for a savior right here in this chair. Nothing magical but very realistic! She met her creator. She had an encounter with the one who knows her better than anyone. In a chair! Wow. What an honor to be there when it happened. Now she knows for sure that she is has a relationship with Christ. That is definitely worth all the bad days I've had and will continue to have while on the job! The next time you see someone sitting in a chair, ask yourself how can this be about more than just sitting down? Can this person meet the God of the universe right where they sit too?

Happy New Year My Friends

This year, this decade is a wrap! Wow, 09 went by sooo fast. I can't really remember a lot about it. The more I think about it though, more and more stuff comes to mind.
February brought the birth of our second son Miles. In June I flew to Cambodia and spent 13 days traveling the country, at times in some rather remote locations. In July I lost my Aunt Bea who was 99 years old. She was like my grandma and I miss her a lot. In August 1Way (past and present members) reunited for Edge's release party. September 18Th was my son Micah's 3rd birthday. He had a party and that was pretty cool. In October Pam and I celebrated 6 married years together. We are having a great life! November 30Th I turned another year older and in December Miles celebrated his first Christmas. I also took another step in toward the finish line on my next project. Although the year was kinda of a blur, it was still a good year!
I once remember reading the biography of Bobby Seals, one of the founding members of the Black Panther Party. In the book Monday always represented a new beginning for him. And so it is with this New Year.
Whether the year got away from us or we could not wait for it to be over. We get to write another chapter in our own personal history that will build upon our mistakes of last year. For some of us, it will allow us to build upon the successes we had.
The New Year is kinda like an adult "do over". How many of us need that? I stopped being a resolutionist (one who makes resolutions every New Year) a while ago. When it comes to the considering the year in front of me I wanna be a revolutionist, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, evolve & mature into the person that Christ wants me to become. For me, this year, 2010 is about the pursuit of holiness. I dare you to join me. C'mon it's Monday!!!!

The Sweet Spot

There is just something about this time of year that makes it the best time of the year, my favorite time of the year. If I could I would put the day before Thanksgiving up until New Year's Day on repeat and let it play the rest of my life. The weather would be ideal (especially here in Soflo), hurricane season would not exist, and I would be always eating that incredible Thanksgiving Day spread that the fam always has (plus leftovers)! That would indeed be ideal. But life doesn't work that way. At 12:01 AM on Friday morning Thanksgiving Thursday turns into Black Friday, and then it is a slow continuous fade till New Years Day. The magic disappears and the only reminder that it was ever here in the first place are the holiday lights that the neighbors leave up far too long. Such is the ebb and flow of life I guess. I get that but I don't have to like it. Lol. But still if there was a repeat button, I would be ready to push it come 11:59 AM on December 31st.

"Proverb, I'm gonna need that pop tart". WHAT????

As I wind down my thoughts from my Summer musicianary trip to Cambodia, I have to tell this story. I was talking with my boy Aaron Monrok the other day and I forget what made me think of it but I had a flash back. We were in the van on our way to some remote village. We had stopped so some of us could revolutionize (ask me by email lol). A few of the teammates were walking around and engaging the natives. I took the time to go back to the van and have a snack. We were encouraged to bring stuff from home to help with being so far away from home, and nothing does that like...... a Pop Tart! So I got to the back seat of the van and was digging my pop tart out of my bag when team member Mike Kultun came to our van. He was saying how they just met and prayed with this woman. Meanwhile I was hearing but not really listening to Mike talking. I was all into how good my pop tart was gonna be. As Mike continued on, I found my Pop Tarts and got them out of my bag. No sooner than I had opened them and raised one to my waiting mouth when I hear the words " "Proverb, we're gonna need those pop tarts"! Surely Mike had no idea what he was saying. Surely he knew you don't try to separate a man and his pop tart, especially this man. Mike was buggin! My response was "What"!!?? He repeated his statement like was actually gonna give him my snack. Then it hit me. What a display of selfishness. How did I look to a van full of missionaries? It was just one pop tart, I had more. The sad part was I was encouraged by most teammates to hold on to it, as it was mine and I brought it from home for me. As conviction buckled me in the back seat of the van, I offered up my Pop Tart. I realized that was a small price to pay for being on such a great adventure with God. Then the greatest thing happened as I offered it up, some more food from another van was miraculously provided. I felt like Abraham when he saw the ram. My pop tart had been spared! Well, you get the picture. Anyways, the point is every day we will get tested. The question we have to ask our self is..... When asked to, will we give up our pop tart?

Proverb's Musicianary Trip: Banteay Chhmar, Day 11

This footage was from day 11 of my trip. The footage does not do the road justice, it was incredible bumpy! It was a long hot dusty rewarding day. Hopefully this clip will capture the feel of our days on the trip. Enjoy!

Proverb's Musicianary Trip: Jim McCandliss Talks About The Work Of Musicianaries International Inc.

I got a chance at one of our rice distro to talk with Jim McCandliss (president of Musicianaries International Inc.). We talked a bit about the purpose behind the Rice For Cambodia Tour 2009. Enjoy.
